Spencer's story is one of survival, a miracle, & a true blessing.  Unfortunately, too many kids in our communities each year are not as fortunate.

On September 9, 2012, Spencer Best, an otherwise healthy 16 year old, went to a basketball workout in his high school gym.  30 minutes later, he collapsed…his heart stopped working.
His coach and a nearby adult began the "chain of survival" by calling 911 and starting CPR.  An AED arrived and delivered a shock to Spencer's heart approximately 5 minutes later.

Spencer was rushed by Life Flight to a nearby hospital where he received a medically implanted defibrillator in his chest that monitors his heart and will provide a life-saving shock if needed. Doctors are working towards his final diagnosis of Long QT Syndrome, an electrical problem with the heart.

Because of the actions of adult bystanders, his coach, and medical first responders, Spencer was able to survive his Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), and have another chance at life.  As a result, Spencer’s HeartStrong Foundation was formed.

Our Mission

The mission of Spencer’s HeartStrong Foundation is to end avoidable death in children and young adults who suffer from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Our Goals

  • Community Preparedness/Readiness – Provide CPR/AED education and training resources so anyone who is called upon in a time of need is prepared and can help save lives.
  • Placement – Work with schools and organizations in AED placement and program development.
  • Heart Screenings – Promote and facilitate youth cardiac screening events that will help prevent SCA in other youth.
  • Support – Share Spencer’s story of survival and be a resource for families of children and young adults who have suffered a SCA or are living with heart conditions like Long QT.
